Nutrition and our meals

Nutritious and tasty meals are provided for the children each day, including morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea.

Our menu is guided by the Australian Dietary Guidelines, which offer current advice on the types and amounts of food needed for health and wellbeing.

Consistent with the Australian Dietary Guidelines, our menu includes:

•Plenty of vegetables, legumes and fruits.

•A variety of cereals (including breads, rice, pasta and noodles).

•Lean meat, fish, poultry and/or alternatives.

•Milks, yoghurts, cheese and/or alternatives.

At our service, we believe that helping children understand where their food comes from and how it supports their health is an important part of their learning and development. We provide engaging, age-appropriate activities that explore the journey of food – from farm to table. This includes gardening experiences, cooking activities and discussions about different food groups and healthy eating habits. Through hands-on learning and everyday conversations,  children develop a deeper understanding of nutrition, make connections to the world around them, and are encouraged to make healthy food choices from an early age.

Each week, a seasonal menu is displayed in the foyer.  Cammeray Children’s Centre prefers:

•Australian made and grown foods

•Free range chicken and eggs

•Lean varieties of beef

•An ever-changing mix of the fresh seasonal fruit

•Garden fresh herbs and vegetables

•Salt reduced product varieties

Some of the children’s favourite meals include a wonderfully fragrant chicken curry, beef pastitsio and a honey soy chicken noodle stir fry.

If a child is hungry following a mealtime or between mealtimes, extra food is available. This may be in the form of an extra serving of the main meal or crackers, fruit or another small and healthy snack.

As we are an ‘Allergy Aware’ centre, please note that no food from home is to be brought into the centre, except with express permission to protect the health and safety of all children..
